Advanced Endoscopy & Colonoscopy

What is Endoscopy?

Endoscopy is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure used to examine internal organs. A thin, flexible tube called an endoscope, equipped with a light and camera, captures detailed images of the body’s interior and displays them on a monitor. The procedure involves inserting the endoscope through natural openings like the mouth, nostrils, or anal cavity for accurate diagnostics.

Modern Uses of Endoscopy

Modern endoscopy not only aids diagnosis but also serves as a treatment method for procedures like stent placement, stone removal, biopsies, and obesity management. Endoscopic weight loss treatments are ideal for those who don’t qualify for bariatric surgery, using devices or medications to limit food intake. These minimally invasive procedures offer faster recovery, no abdominal scars, and less discomfort compared to traditional surgery.

What is the Endoscopy Procedure?

Endoscopy is performed by a gastroenterologist or surgeon. For upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, fasting for 6-8 hours is required. Sedatives and throat-numbing anesthesia are administered to ensure comfort.

The endoscope is carefully passed through the throat to capture real-time images of the stomach.

For weight loss, a silicone gastric balloon is inserted and inflated in the stomach, reducing capacity and appetite. The procedure takes 20-30 minutes, followed by overnight observation and discharge the next day with a diet plan and medications.

Types of Endoscopy
  • Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy: A thin, flexible tube is inserted through the mouth to examine the esophagus and upper digestive tract.
  • Colonoscopy: This procedure uses an endoscope inserted through the anal cavity to examine the colon or rectum.
  • Hysteroscopy: The endoscope is inserted through the vagina to investigate the uterus.
