Revisional Bariatric Surgery with Laparoscopic & Robotic Precision

What is this procedure?

Revisional surgery is a secondary procedure performed to either improve weight loss outcomes for morbidly obese patients or to address complications from a previous bariatric surgery. It is commonly used to revise surgeries like Gastric Banding or Gastric Bypass, especially for patients who initially underwent a Gastric Sleeve procedure.

Main Features of the Surgery

Revisional surgery offers more effective weight loss results as a secondary procedure. The approach is tailored based on the patient’s initial surgery, with the surgeon selecting the most suitable procedure for optimal outcomes.

Who is it recommended for?

Revisional surgery is recommended for individuals who are undergoing a two-step surgical procedure due to morbid obesity. It is also ideal for those who have experienced weight regain after their primary bariatric surgery. In such cases, the procedure serves as a correction to the original surgery. Digestive Health Institute has successfully performed the highest number of revisional surgeries in India, offering patients exceptional outcomes.

Advantages of the Surgery
  • Minimal Scarring: The procedure involves minimally invasive techniques, resulting in smaller, less noticeable scars.
  • Faster Recovery: Thanks to advanced laparoscopic and robotic methods, recovery time is significantly reduced, allowing for a quicker return to daily activities.
  • Enhanced Weight Loss: Revisional surgery provides an additional opportunity for patients to achieve substantial weight loss, addressing issues like morbid obesity more effectively.

Sleeve Gastrectomy Revision

For patients who have undergone sleeve gastrectomy but are not achieving adequate weight loss or have experienced complications like acid reflux, a revision can involve converting the sleeve to a gastric bypass or performing another corrective procedure.

In cases where patients have regained weight after gastric bypass or have developed complications (e.g., anastomotic stricture, dumping syndrome), revisional surgery might involve repairing the bypass, converting to another type of bariatric surgery, or addressing specific issues.

If patients who underwent a duodenal switch procedure have experienced weight regain or nutritional deficiencies, a revision can be performed to address the specific issues and improve long-term outcomes.

In cases where the stomach pouch or stoma has stretched after a gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy, the revision may involve resizing or re-tightening the pouch to restore the restriction and help with weight loss.

If a patient has had a less effective procedure like gastric banding or sleeve gastrectomy and has not achieved the desired weight loss, they might be converted to a more aggressive surgery like the duodenal switch for better results.

Dietary Requirements

All patients undergoing bariatric surgery at Digestive Health Institute must follow a 7-day liquid diet before the procedure. Our experienced bariatric nutritionists in Mumbai prescribe these liquid diets, which can also be provided through the SoulFuel Cafe at the DHI Centre.

Patients will follow a structured transitional diet process over the first 30 days after surgery, beginning with a liquid diet, progressing to a semi-solid diet, and eventually to a full solid food diet.
