It’s essential to give your body a chance to stabilize with the right diet and wellness practices. Bariatric surgery is a life-saving intervention—not to be confused with liposuction or tummy tucks, which are cosmetic, body-sculpting procedures. These terms often get mixed up, but they are not interchangeable. Key Differences Between Bariatric Surgery, Liposuction, and Tummy Tucks Bariatric Surgery: A medical procedure aimed at life-saving weight loss by altering the gastrointestinal anatomy. Patients can lose between 20 to 100 kg (depending on their starting weight) and often experience remission of co-morbidities like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, PCOD, heart disease, acid reflux, and infertility. Liposuction and Tummy Tucks: Cosmetic procedures designed for body sculpting. The maximum weight loss after liposuction is typically 6-8 kg and does not address co-morbidities. At Digestive Health Institute, my team and I guide our patients through a comprehensive, long-term journey before and after bariatric surgery to ensure sustained benefits and healthier lives. Frequently Asked Questions About Bariatric Surgery 1. At what BMI does one qualify for bariatric surgery in India? Bariatric surgery is recommended for individuals who are: Obese or morbidly obese with a BMI of 27.5–32.5 or 32.5–37.5, depending on their health conditions and associated co-morbidities. 2. What about scars and pain? At Digestive Health Institute, we specialize in Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS), where the entire procedure is performed through a single incision. This technique: Minimizes pain Accelerates recovery Leaves no visible scars 3. Is there an age limit for bariatric surgery? Minimum Age: Surgery can be safely performed on adolescents as young as 15 years, provided they have achieved optimal bone growth. No Upper Age Limit: Bariatric surgery is also safe for older adults, as long as they are medically fit for surgery. 4. Can a patient with uncontrolled diabetes undergo bariatric surgery? Yes, most morbidly obese patients undergoing bariatric surgery have type 2 diabetes. Key considerations: A seven-day pre-operative low-calorie liquid diet helps stabilize blood sugar levels. Pre-operative consultation with a diabetologist or endocrinologist is advised for better blood sugar control. Post-surgery, the need for medications and insulin typically decreases significantly. Most patients no longer require antidiabetic medications within 3–6 months. 5. Can one conceive after bariatric surgery? Weight loss following bariatric surgery greatly improves the chances of conception in morbidly obese individuals. However, it is advisable to: Wait for at least one year after surgery before attempting to conceive to allow the body to stabilize. How to stay well hydrated after Bariatric Surger By Dr. Muffi October 13, 2018 The Importance of Hydration After Bariatric Surgery Staying hydrated is critical for overall health, but did you know that proper hydration is also a key factor in achieving better weight loss outcomes after bariatric surgery? A study presented at the 2017 American College of Surgeons Quality and Safety Conference highlighted the positive correlation between hydration and improved results post-surgery. Our bodies are made up of 60-70% water, and this essential component supports every bodily function. Water helps with digestion, absorption, perspiration, and other vital processes. Without it, our bodies simply cannot function properly. Hydration After Bariatric Surgery After undergoing bariatric surgery, your new stomach will be much smaller, meaning you won’t be able to drink large amounts of water at once. Instead, you’ll need to gradually sip fluids throughout the day. Drinking too much at once can lead to unpleasant symptoms, such as nausea and vomiting. To help you stay properly hydrated post-surgery, here are some tips to increase your fluid intake: Do’s for Staying Hydrated: Keep Water Handy: Always carry a water bottle with you and take small sips throughout the day. Track Your Intake: Aim for at least 2 liters of water daily. Create a hydration schedule—e.g., 200ml by 10 am, 200ml by noon, and so on. Set Reminders: Use a mobile app or set a reminder every 30 minutes to encourage regular water intake. Infuse Your Water: Add flavors like ginger and lemon, rosemary and rose water, or cucumber and mint for a refreshing, calorie-free twist. Drink Herbal Teas: Opt for unsweetened teas such as chamomile, mint, or fennel to stay hydrated without the added sugar. Experiment with Temperature: Try cold, warm, or room-temperature water to see what you prefer. Enjoy Ice Cubes: Sucking on ice cubes can be a fun way to hydrate. Broths Help Too: Chicken, beef, or fish broth can contribute to your daily fluid intake. Don’ts to Keep in Mind: Don’t Wait for Thirst: Thirst is already a sign that you are dehydrated. Keep sipping throughout the day. Limit Coffee and Tea: These beverages can have diuretic effects, leading to increased fluid loss. Avoid Carbonated Beverages: These can upset your stomach, especially as it heals, causing nausea and gas. Don’t Replace Water with Sugary Drinks: Juices and sodas contain extra calories that you don’t need for hydration. Limit Alcohol: Avoid alcohol for at least 6 months after surgery, as it may reduce weight loss success. Stop Drinking Before Meals: Cease fluid intake 15 minutes before eating to avoid nausea or vomiting during meals. Signs of Dehydration: Be vigilant and look out for these common signs of dehydration: Feeling thirsty Dizziness Headache Rapid heart rate Dark urine Constipation Weakness How Much Water Should You Drink? A simple formula to calculate your daily water intake is: Water (in liters) = Your Weight (in kg) x 0.033 For example, if you weigh 80 kg, you should aim to drink 2.64 liters of water daily. Keep in mind that this requirement increases with exercise or hot weather. The best way to gauge your hydration is by checking the color of your urine: light yellow indicates proper hydration. Final Thoughts Proper hydration is an essential part of your recovery and long-term health after bariatric surgery. By making sure you’re drinking enough water throughout the day, you can help your body heal, support weight loss, and stay healthy in the long run. However, we cannot generalize a weight loss surgery to all obese patients because the physiological conditions of everyone differ. Being a surgical intervention to overcome obesity, there are several misconceptions that revolve around obesity surgery. But not everything you hear is true. In an attempt to separate fact from fiction, below is a list of some of the common misconceptions that prevent obese patients from proceeding with Bariatric Surgery Myth 1: Bariatric surgery is an extremely risky procedure. Fact: Any surgical procedure has some potential risks and complications associated with it. But with recent technological and medical advancements in the field of obesity surgery, various bariatric surgery side effects have been minimized. Also, it is very important to choose your surgeon wisely, Bariatric surgery done from an accredited surgeon / center reduces the risk drastically. However, as a thumb rule, you should always discuss with your surgeon about the risks and benefits associated with each procedure. Myth 2: Weight loss is the sole benefit of obesity surgery. Fact: Even though bariatric surgery plays a significant role in reducing weight, it also helps in improving other health conditions faced by obese patients, including diabetes, sleep apnea, dyslipidemia acid reflux, etc. Infact a huge number of surgeries are being done for remission of Diabetes. Bariatric surgery that is done primarily to treat diseases such diabetes, dyslipidemia or sleep apnea is called Metabolic Surgery. Myth 3: Weight loss surgery is listed under cosmetic surgery and hence it does not carry an insurance coverage. Fact: This is a myth that does not hold true in the present. These days, many insurance companies cover surgical weight loss procedures. Which is why you should have a detailed discussion with your insurance provider and your surgeon to determine what aspect of the procedure can be covered under insurance. Myth 4: Undergoing obesity surgery is a waste of time because you can regain weight in the future. Fact: Several researches have concluded that patients who have undergone bariatric surgery lose more weight in comparison to people who choose conventional weight loss methods. However, weight loss surgery is not a miracle procedure to lose weight. You must strictly adhere to the diet and exercise regime as instructed by your surgeon to maintain your reduced weight in the long run. Weight regain also largely depends on the type of procedure, it is important to discuss in detail with your surgeon the type of procedure that is best suited for you as an individual, as there is no one procedure that fits all. Myth 5: You can eat to your heart’s content post the surgery. Fact: Though every bariatric patient may wish this myth was true, unfortunately, it isn’t. Bariatric surgery helps you reduce your meal portions in a systematic and healthy manner. It also reduces your appetite and increases satiety, therefore keeping you satisfied with small portions. In fact, patients must strictly adhere to a pre-operative and post-operative diet during their bariatric journey. The whole purpose of the surgery is to help you learn to make healthier food choices and to eat for enough energy. Myth 6: Stomach stapling is a fixed procedure in all obesity surgeries. Fact: There are different types of bariatric surgeries tailored to the specific needs of patients. While some procedures involve stomach stapling, others, such as gastric bypass surgery involve bypassing some parts of the small intestine in addition to reducing the stomach size. Myth 7: You need to undergo plastic surgery after bariatric surgery. Fact: Not all patients that undergo Bariatric Surgery require plastic / cosmetic surgery. Super obese patients that lose 40 -50 kgs or more may require plastic surgery for loose skin. However, this should only be considered 2 years after bariatric surgery once weight loss stabilizes. Most patients that indulge in regular physical activity after surgery rarely require any cosmetic / plastic surgery. In terms of scarring post bariatric surgery, these days, most bariatric surgeries are minimally invasive done via 4-5 tiny incisions Bariatric surgery can also be done scarless (via the belly button) leaving no scars at all. Myth 8: Bariatric surgery will prevent pregnancy. Fact: All females undergoing bariatric surgery are advised to wait for a year after surgery to conceive / plan a pregnancy only because it could interfere with their weight loss agenda and affect the overall nutritional status of mother and child. Post 1 year of surgery pregnancy is normal with no side effects. The surgery will not affect their ability to conceive or to carry the baby or even during childbirth. On the contrary, obesity itself can lead to infertility in both men and women. Myth 9: Obesity surgery is for fat reduction. Fact: Surgeries like liposuction and abdominoplasty are fat reduction surgeries that cannot be done on the whole body. Bariatric surgery is done to limit your food intake so that you can lose weight and maintain it in a healthy manner. Myth 10: Weight loss surgery entails a long recovery time. Fact: With the inclusion of laparoscopic technology in bariatric surgery, patients need to stay in

Alongside the health benefits and significant weight loss, following your surgeon’s guidance post-surgery is critical to achieving long-term success. One of the most crucial, yet often overlooked, aspects of recovery after bariatric surgery is hydration. While the idea of eating less may sound ideal for reaching your weight-loss goals, the reduced stomach size can make it challenging to consume enough fluids. Maintaining proper hydration is vital to support your recovery and overall health. Why Hydration is Essential Post-Surgery Water plays a fundamental role in keeping your body functioning optimally. It aids in: Flushing out toxins and waste. Hydrating your skin, hair, and body cells. Supporting overall metabolic processes. Despite its importance, many bariatric patients focus on their food intake while unintentionally neglecting fluids. This often results in dehydration, one of the leading causes of hospital visits post-surgery. To avoid complications, bariatric patients should aim to consume 6–8 cups of fluids daily. However, with a smaller stomach capacity, achieving this goal can initially feel daunting. Top Tips to Stay Hydrated Here are simple yet effective strategies to help you meet your hydration goals: 1. Keep a Water Bottle Handy Immediately after surgery, drinking large amounts of water at once may feel uncomfortable. Instead, sip small amounts throughout the day. Carrying a water bottle ensures you have access to water at all times and acts as a constant reminder to stay hydrated. 2. Infuse Your Water with Natural Flavors Drinking plain water repeatedly can get boring. To make it more enjoyable, infuse your water with natural flavors like lemon, orange, mint, or cucumber. These additions can enhance the taste, making it easier to maintain your hydration routine. 3. Track Your Water Intake In today’s digital age, staying hydrated is easier than ever with the help of water-tracking apps. These apps allow you to set daily hydration goals and send reminders to drink water at regular intervals. Tracking your progress not only helps you stay accountable but also enables you to adjust your intake if necessary. Hydration: A Lifelong Commitment Drinking enough water is not just a post-surgery requirement but a lifelong commitment for bariatric patients. Surgeons and weight-loss experts in Mumbai and beyond emphasize the importance of hydration in ensuring a smooth recovery and sustaining long-term health benefits. By prioritizing hydration and following these simple strategies, you can prevent dehydration, speed up your recovery, and support your overall well-being on your weight-loss journey.
